The article argues that schools do in fact shape a childââ¬â¢s interaction with the system and it has to do with the schoolââ¬â¢s discipline, which Kupchik describes using ââ¬Å"the school-to-prison pipelineâ⬠metaphor. The article delves into the unhealthy changes which schools have implemented to their discipline that promote the pipeline. He concludes by proposing strategies for reform that address the issue head on. 2. Kupchik suggests that there are three ways in which a childââ¬â¢s introduction to the system can take place. The first being, it is the first setting in which a ââ¬Å"childââ¬â¢s deficits become apparent,â⬠which increase their risk of school failure and incarceration (94). Thus, without a basic education, these underperforming students are likely to pursue illegitimate activity/careers that lead to incarceration (94).
